How To Get To Cornwall From London

We all know that Cornwall is one of the best destinations in the UK for a short, relaxing break or an extended family holiday. The question for those of us living in or around the capital is how to get there as quickly and as cheaply as possible. This is especially relevant for those planning a short visit where time is of the essence.

There are basically three viable options – air, rail or road. Flying is definitely a good option if you can get to Gatwick, London City or Stansted reasonably easily. At the time of writing, Ryanair are threatening to axe their Cornwall route over an airport fees dispute but there is no question mark over Air South West services from Gatwick and London City to Plymouth and Newquay. Fares are very reasonable especially when booked in advance. Opt for Plymouth if your destination is South East Cornwall as far West as Looe and Newquay if you are travelling to the West of Looe.

Similarly, there are frequent fast train services from Paddington to Penzance. However, it is usually essential to book a seat in advance. It is a long way to go standing up!

Finally, the majority will still prefer to use their own vehicles and here it can definitely pay to follow 2 or 3 rules. First, stick to the M4 / M5 route rather than opting for the more scenic M3 / A303 unless you are coming from South of the M3. The latter route slows down considerably between Andover and Honiton owing to a number of single lane stretches and should only be contemplated by those who can save time at the London end.

Secondly, try and time your journey to avoid the rush hour around Bristol. This is where the M4 and M5 converge and a surge in local traffic can often result in a crawl for several miles.

Finally, take care with the route you choose west of Exeter. The spinal road is the A30 and is the quicker route to most places in Cornwall. However, if you are going to the South Coast between Plymouth and Looe, the A38 should get you there quicker.
